HOT TRAVEL DESTINATIONS
FOR 2021 (or 2022)
Whilst travel is still difficult for many, we’re looking to the future and praying for restrictions to lift. Whether it be 2021 or even into 2020, here are some of LURA’s dream destinations. From the mystical monasteries of Bhutan, to the unashamedly under-appreciated landscapes of the Scottish Highlands, these are the top destinations you should be heading to this year.
Istanbul and Bodrum, Turkey
Yes, it’s time to go back to Turkey. With the first phase of Istanbul’s new airport open, ready to welcome 90 million passengers annually, and major cruise lines returning to Turkey (set to be welcomed back with a new cruise port) Turkey is welcoming visitors back with open arms, and we recommend you oblige. On the coast, a host of new hotels are filling Bodrum with a new lease of life. From the new Six Senses Kaplankaya, the fully refurbished Mandarin Oriental, or Ian Schrager’s Bodrum edition, enjoy sweeping views of the Aegean, old stone buildings and stunning blue waters. It’s time to rediscover the beauty of Turkey.
Bhutan
Bhutan is a remarkable place, a paradise of pristine villages and majestic monasteries. Years ago, Gross National Happiness was determined as being more important than Gross National Product, and, with the kingdom’s “High Value Low Impact” tourism policy, where visitors pay a daily fee, it remains blissfully untarnished, welcoming only those who are truly dedicated to embracing the Bhutanese culture. Stay in one of Aman’s five lodges, or the new Six Senses Bhutan, as you hike up the Himalaya’s toughest but most rewording treks, visiting temple fortresses or bird-watch in the pine forests.
Belize
As beautiful new retreats pop-up in Belize, it’s swiftly turning into one of the most desirable luxury destinations. From the Heminway-inspired Itz’ana Resort and Residences to Turtle Inn, Mahogany Bay from Hilton’s Curio Collection and Leonardo DiCaprio’s private island eco-resort Blackadore Caye, there’s certainly no shortage of truly special places to stay. You can enjoy an array of incredible foods, fascinating wildlife and snorkelling in the turquoise waters of the second largest barrier reef in the world.
Tokyo & Kyoto, Japan
With Tokyo hosting the 2020 (2021) summer Olympics, it is set to be a pretty exciting year for the country. Japan’s first Ace Hotel will open in Kyoto, a stunning paradise designed by Kengo Kuma – champion of natural materials and light. Tokyo, meanwhile, was recently named Condé Nast’s top city for the third year in a row. Explore everything from its tranquil temples to ultramodern skyscrapers in the calm before the storm. Enjoy the buzz from the new Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon.
Singapore
The wonderfully diamond-studded backdrop to Crazy Rich Asians, Singapore boasts unrivalled glitz and glamour – and this year it’s time to explore it for yourself. With the new Six Senses Maxwell opened in a restored colonial building, bustling night markets which boast incredible street food and dazzling futuristic architecture, Singapore’s a truly fascinating city which is, rightfully, having its moment. And if you fancy something more desert-island retreat, there’s no shortage of grass-roofed bungalows and overwater villas on nearby private islands.
Scottish Highlands
As we traverse the world looking for impeccable landscapes, we often forget the marvels that are on our doorsteps. This year, it’s time we start, and head to the Highlands to appreciate the remarkable mountain views and skiing opportunities. Others are clearly appreciating it already - the Danish team behind Killiehuntly Farmhouse and Kinloch Lodge, and the Swiss gallerists behind Hauser & Wirth making over the Fife Arms. And with all these luxurious properties making stays in the Highlands as special as those further afield, there’s no reason not to make your holiday a little less far flung this year.
